Audi Q5 Rivals and Background

Rivalling the BMW X3, Land Rover Freelander and forthcoming Mercedes MLK, the Q5 is being built on the same platform as the new A4 and A5. Inside styling is expected to reflect that of the Audi A5 coupe whilst it will have the space to transport five adults comfortably.

Originally based on the Audi ‘Steppenwolf’ project, the concept included 4-level air suspension with an adjustment range of 60 millimetres providing ample ground clearance of up to 223 millimetres for difficult terrain as well as a low centre of gravity and optimum aerodynamics at high speed. Other features include an innovative electronically controlled electrohydraulic system which replaces the conventional, manually activated handbrake.

The more recent Cross Cabriolet concept, however, not only hints at the look and styling of the new Q5 but suggests predictions of a soft-top 4x4 to follow in 2009 could well be accurate.
